The surrogacy industry in India is  estimated at around 400 million dollars per year and has witnessed the emergence of over 3000 fertility clinics all over the country. The Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill, 2019 (“the Bill”) was passed by the Lok Sabha on 5th August 2019. The Bill bans commercial surrogacy and permits only altruistic surrogacy i.e., surrogacy with no monetar compensation apart from coverage of medical and insurance related expenses of the surrogate mother.

On June 25, Italian luxury brand Prada at its Spring/Summer 2026 menswear show in Milan, unveiled footwear inspired by India’s Geographical Indication (GI) tagged Kolhapuri chappals, that ultimately sparked accusation of “cultural misappropriation”. The value of those Kolhapuri chappals copied by Prada were valued around Rs1 lakh–Rs1.2 lakh, and was launched without any initial acknowledgement of the Indian heritage and cultural significance.

On May 23, 2023 India formally announced its interest to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Gujarat with Ahmedabad as the proposed host city. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and President P. T. Usha, a former Olympic athlete, submitted an “expression of interest” to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) on behalf of India’s Commonwealth Games Association in March 2025 and were informed that the CGF received the expression of interest.
